Overview

You will be picked up by your driver in the morning and taken to visit the Elephant Transit home for the 12:00 feeding time. Here you can watch the elephants being fed. Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH) takes care of orphaned elephant calves – until they are independent and able enough to be released back to the wild. The elephant calves have no boundaries in the area and have the freedom to roam wherever they want. Similarly, wild elephants also visit ETH premises. The Transit Home is a lively place. Feeding milk to the calves every three hours is a recurring job on all 365 days of the year. Elephant calves at ETH are fed once every three hours. After the feeding proceed to Udawalawe National Park - Here you will go on a 2-3 hour safari to the Udawalawe National Park – renowned as the only national park that has guaranteed elephant sightings throughout the year, It is in an area of 31,800 hectares, which was declared a protected sanctuary with full national park status in 1972. The park area which falls within two provinces of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by mountain ranges, the terrain of the park is a mixture of grassland, which of all Sri Lanka’s wildlife reserves, best rivals the Savanna of Africa and shrub jungle. Teak plantations, water holes and two important factors make this park special - the large Udawalawe Reservoir and the Walawe River, which ensure a supply of water for the fauna within. Internationally renowned for its large herd of elephants, the park is also known for several species of Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo and Jackal.  Fun fact- The Twycross Zoo in the East Midlands, the UK  in 2010 opened its newest attraction - a Sri Lanka-inspired elephant habitat and walkway named "UdaWalawe" themed as per the UdaWalawe National Park and Elephant Sanctuary in Sri Lanka! If customers wish they can be taken to a local restaurant for lunch (at own cost) after the Elephant transit home visit – please inform your driver.
