Destination Overview

Malacca City is the Capital of the Malaysian state sharing the same name, Malacca.

Rich with history and filled with museums and aged structures, holidays to Malacca are the best way to experience Malaysia’s history. Malacca was an essential port for trading with India and China from the 1400’s and this business was essential to the city’s development. Tourists flock in to experience the heritage of Malacca and visit the remains of the Dutch, British and Portuguese structures and forts that were used when the Europeans ruled the city beginning from the early 1500’s.

Visitors pour in from countries all over the world to visit Malacca, with its fame growing from its untouched authentic structures and ancient history. Malacca holidays are filled with trips to various museums and historical sites left behind from the European rulers that once inhabited the city. The Dutch square is a beautiful place to visit, boasting the astounding Tang Beng Swee Clock Tower and located close to Christ Church. The church was constructed in the 1700’s, and the flooring interestingly contains Dutch tombstones. Christ Church is well intact and has been maintained in its original state, allowing tourists to visit daily and is conveniently free of charge. Museums are found all over the city and tell the story of Malacca and its history from all the different ruling periods. Arguably the most intriguing museum is The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum. The Museum opened its doors in 1985 and was actually a beautiful home for generations, before it was turned into a museum to document the history and culture of China-Malays in Malacca. When planning your holiday to Malacca, allow time to venture to a few, if not more of these stunning and interesting museums, you won’t regret it.

Holidays in Malacca allow tourists to learn and experience an authentic culture, which is often lost when travelling to ancient cities by new development. While the rich history draws in the crowds, there is much more to see and do in this beautiful city. Malacca has become a popular destination for families as they enjoy the atmosphere of the city, while also keeping the kids busy by visiting some of the more entertaining attractions during their stay. The Malacca Zoo is considered the best Zoo in all of Malaysia and is proud to encourage large natural habitats for its animals, being situated on a rainforest reserve. A holiday in Malacca isn’t complete without visiting some of the quieter sanctuaries a little further out, and seeing the incredible wildlife that Malaysia is so well known for. The Padang Kemunting Turtle Sanctuary is a must see, and you will enjoy a rare experience to get up close and personal with the endangered Hawksbill turtle.

When organizing your accommodation for your unforgettable Malacca holiday, there are plenty of options to satisfy all budgets. Guesthouses are popular if you are wanting to stay close to the city and be amongst the atmosphere of the main areas near Jonker Street. If luxury and location are what you are looking for, try the prestigious Guesthouses which are both stunning and close to the action of Jonker Street. Some of the more interestingly located and quieter hotels can be found a few kilometres out, even next to the Turtle Sanctuary you can find various beautiful hotels to choose from.

Booking a holiday to Malaysia is often dependant on the weather conditions.

Malaysia experiences two seasons of wet and dry and is booming with tourists year round as the temperatures remain warm throughout the seasons. The best time to visit is from December to February as it is much cooler and is the driest time to visit Malaysia. The warmer and rainy seasons that follow reach highs of about 32°C, and still permit for comfortable climates when sightseeing around the town.

Malaysian holidays in the cooler months will have you enjoying the sights through the days much more comfortably without losing the desirable tropic climates of a warm getaway. Browse the shops in Jonker Street and experience the liveliness of the markets whether it be day or night. Visit the Portuguese Settlement where the descendants of the Portuguese rule reside today, and see the famous settlement of wooden houses that lead up to the waterfront. The cooler season is definitely a preferable time to consider when planning your holiday in Malaysia.

Malacca in the hotter months of March and April see temperatures at about 32°C and makes for an equally enjoyable stay as the cooler months before. Humidity is definitely unavoidable for a Malaysian holiday. However, if you venture out of the city, it’s more comfortable in Malacca than other parts of Malaysia with its lush and rainforest jungles. Visitors can enjoy the Museums during the hotter parts of the day and experience the history and culture of this extraordinary city.

The rainy months in Malacca fall from September to November and though the rainfall is heavy, it is generally over quickly. Malacca is a perfect destination when booking your holiday to Malaysia, as its rainfall is recorded as much lower than some of the other popular holiday hot spots. The rain tends to fall in the evening after the end of a humid day, which leaves your days open to explore all that the city has on show. The month of September is the most popular time to visit during the rainy season as the Malaysian Festival is held during this time. The festival lasts for two weeks and is celebrated all over Malaysia. Malacca is buzzing with arts and crafts lining the streets and daily entertainment, welcoming many tourists to experience the annual event.
