Nestled on the shores of the mighty Ottawa River, the pretty little city of Pembroke, Ontario was formally established in 1858. It was a rough and ready frontier spirit that first forged the town as it evolved into a bustling centre for the logging industry. Evidence of this rich past can be found in the architecture of the historic homes, stores and churches in the downtown district. Today, much of that energetic drive still exists, and Pembroke is the largest regional service centre between Ottawa and North Bay. Situated on the beautiful Ottawa River, Pembroke is a vibrant little city that is renowned as “the heart of the Ottawa Valley”.
Visitors can expect to travel two hours from Ottawa or five hours from Toronto to reach Pembroke to experience everything the city has to offer year-round. If you’re visiting in summer, there’s no other movie night like one at the Riverwalk Amphitheater, where during the months of July and August you can catch a flick under the stars. In winter, hop on a snowmobile and cruise down more than 2,400 kilometres of groomed trails throughout the Ottawa Valley, including trails within the city limits. Afterwards, warm up with a beverage and a snack from one of the city’s many restaurant choices. Nearby you will find a wide-range of activities, especially with Algonquin Park being so close. Paddlers can choose their preference, with kayaking, canoeing, and rafting possibilities throughout the area. We recommend visiting Barron River Canyon while staying in town. There’s also plenty to do and see for hikers, cyclists, bird watchers, and those who simply enjoy being outdoors.
