Unlike the majority of Indonesia, Rantepao is a primarily Christian town. Home to the cultural center of the Toraja people, you’ll see religious, cultural and architectural variations from the rest of Indonesia. In this small town or just overgrown village, homestays are common and give visitors a glimpse into the daily routine of locals.
We can arrange tours with local tour guides to take you around the city, to see some of the lesser known sites and view a traditional funeral where you’ll learn about the unique, local practices and burial sites. A scooter is one of the easiest ways to get around town and can easily be arranged. Be sure to pack rain gear as even in the dry season you may experience short rainshowers and cool evenings. If you’re wanting to take home some souvenirs, be sure to stop by a Todi Shop to pick up and learn about local weaving techniques and looms. The traditional tongkonan style architecture can be viewed throughout Rantepao or you can sign up for a tour with us to Kete Kesu Village to see traditional homes and a museum explaining the traditions of the local culture.
