National Gallery of Victoria

Founded in 1861, the National Gallery of Victoria is Australia’s oldest public art gallery. The National Gallery of Victoria displays works of art for the enjoyment of the community. The Gallery is a popular tourist attraction for people on holiday in Melbourne and is located in St Kilda Road, a short walk across Swanson Bridge south from Flinders Street Station. The Gallery underwent major redevelopment and was reopened in late 2003. Mario Bellini, a leading Italian architect and designer, was the principal architect for the buildings redevelopment.

It is argued that the Galleries International collections are the most comprehensive in the country. Don’t leave your Melbourne holiday incomplete by leaving out this attraction from your itinerary.

The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Victoria, which is a short walk north up St Kilda Road from the gallery, houses an extensive collection comprising more than 20,000 Australian works.

Many people choose Holidays to Melbourne because of the arts and culture the city has to offer.

People on holiday in Melbourne should however bear in mind that the Gallery caters for all interests; for those who like to just stroll through the collections taking their time to contemplate the exhibits, through to offering lectures, floor talks, workshops, tours, films, performances, children's activities and special events all inspired by the NGV's exhibitions and collections.
