Alibaug

Alibaug, with its blend of sun, sea and history, is a popular weekend destination from Mumbai. Situated 30 km south of Mumbai in Raigad district, Alibaug was an important naval base of the Maratha king, Shivaji. Lying on the trade route between the Malabar coast and the Persian Gulf, Alibaug and the surrounding areas were strategic importance and the Siddis of Murud-Janjira, the Marathas, Portugese and the British vied for its control. The sea fort of Kolaba, which Shivaji built in 1680 is also the town’s most popular attraction. Alibaug was developed by the Maratha admiral, Kanhoji Aangre.

The area also provided sanctuary for Bene Israeli Jews who fled their homeland fearing persecution. Israel Alley in Alibaug has a synagogue.

Vast stretch of clean beach, gentle sea, country homes just a hop from the seashore often forms the idea of a weekend getaway for Mumbaikars. With fresh catch from the sea and tender coconuts to guzzle it down, Alibaug completes the idea of a weekend getaway.

There is nothing much to do in Alibaug unless your sole purpose is to enjoy doing nothing other than going to the beach, frolicking in the sea or taking a trip to the numerous forts that lie like a string of pearls along the coast. However, that has been the USP of the beach town. Alibaug offers a respite from Mumbai’s hectic lifestyle. Its proximity to Mumbai (just two hours from Gateway of India) makes it a paisa vasool (value for money) destination.

Alibaug is an all-season destination. However, the advent of rains makes it a romantic place and is also where Mumbai’s rich and famous own their weekend homes.
