Apollo Bay

  Rolling green hills overlook Apollo Bay and this creates quite a scenic backdrop when viewed from the beach, foreshore and shops. An Apollo Bay holiday affords tourists the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views from the Marriners Lookout which is located at the northern end of town off Marriners Lookout Road. Located only a short walk from the car park, along a scenic mountainside pathway, is the lookout where there are views of Apollo Bay's town centre, the harbour and beaches up and down the coast. In certain weather conditions it is possible to see the silhouette of the SS Casino in the waters close to the shore when looking eastwards. The steamship sank in 1932 while trying to dock at Apollo Bay. Apollo Bay holidays allow visitors to explore the delightful picturesque country lane along the Barnham River with its lush farmland and the cool green that is the Otways. For a great picnic whilst on holiday in Apollo Bay, go to Tarry at Paradise which sheltered by giant tree ferns. For the more energetic tourists on an Apollo Bay holiday there is a steep walk to the lookout at Crows Nest which offers spectacular views of the township, harbour and ocean. Crows Nest is a particular favourite for photographers.

  A popular scenic route for those on an Apollo Bay holiday is to drive along the Barham River Road which follows the Barham River inland from the coast. The drive takes visitors through the lush rainforest of the Barham Valley eventually ending up at the Marriners Falls. Just south of Apollo Bay on the other side of the Barham River is the small seaside community of Marengo which offers quiet, sandy beaches. Skenes Creek is another small and scenic seaside community which is a 5 kilometre drive north of Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road. Evans Lookout is about 2 kilometres inland from Skenes Creek which offers fantastic views of the coast.

  There are a couple of museums that are really worth exploring in Apollo Bay. The Bass Strait Shell Museum, at the golf course end of town, offers a good collection of local and overseas shells, corals and preserved sea life specimens. The Old Cable Station Museum which is located on the Great Ocean Road at the northern edge of Apollo Bay, features collections of local memorabilia housed in the former cable station which was used for communications between Tasmania and the Australian mainland.

Winter

  Winter in Apollo Bay is from May until September. Regardless of the season, the views are always spectacular. A winter holiday in Apollo Bay can be a very romantic experience enhanced by a cosy open fire and complemented by stunning winter scenery. Winter is also the time for Whale watching when Southern Right whales can be seen along the south coast.   Each female produces one calf every three years, usually born in August and once calves are well established they return to Antarctica to feed through the summer months. The whales pass quite close to shore or cliffs and can be identified by their distinguishing features. The drive along the Great Ocean Road provides many whale spotting vantage points.

Spring

  Spring is from mid September until the end of November and the weather is changeable but warm. People are out strolling on the beach, eating outdoors and the town's starting to wake up after a long winter. Spring is also the best time to go on holiday to Apollo Bay if you are planning on visiting the many waterfalls and rainforests in the area. The winter will have ensured plenty of recent water fall and the weather will be very pleasant.

Summer

  For those looking to enjoy the magnificent beaches and make the most of the many water activities on offer in Apollo Bay, then summer time is definitely the time to go. Summer is the busiest time of year to visit as there will be many people on holiday in Apollo Bay from both within Australia and internationally. Summer appeals to a younger crowd and there is definitely a buzz in the area at this time of year. Summer is from December until February.

Autumn

  Autumn in the best time for Apollo Bay holidays for fishing enthusiasts. Autumn also sees the Apollo Bay and Otway District Show with various equestrian events. The Saturday Foreshore Market is also an event not to be missed which takes place near the surf lifesaving club when the weather is ok. Autumn is from March until May and regular visitors often choose spring and autumn as their favourite time of year to visit because it offers the best of everything Apollo Bay has to offer.
